Maldives: A Thousand Island Paradise

The Maldives – I’ve been dreaming of spending a weekend on this exotic country, and I just can’t fully describe the beauty that I’ve seen recently.

Paradise is an understatement, perhaps some my photos can show some of exquisite and attractive places of Maldives.

The cluster of islands of the Maldives gives out the picture of a thousand pearl drops speckled across the Indian Ocean.

The cluster of islands are grouped into 26 atolls and well known for its very own unique exquisiteness is the capital city Malé.

The first surprise among visitors is that they will arrive atMalé International Airport, which also; a separate Island named Hulhulé Island, adjacent to the capital Malé.

Visitors to Maldives do not need to apply for a visa prior to arrival, regardless of their country of origin, provided they have a valid passport, proof of onward travel, and the money to be self-sufficient while in the country.

On arrival a thirty day visa is granted to visitors.

After landing on the narrow strip of the Malé  International Airport or any other airport in the Maldives, you need to catch either a boat or seaplane to your actual destination.

To get to Malé, the capital, you can catch a ferry from the airport, that leaves every few minutes for just a dollar or 10 Maldivian Rufiyaas during daytime.

Dhonis have been used by locals for centuries and this ferry is a modern adaptation to the traditional one and is often bedecked in kitsch decorations.

Please be informed that the Maldives is a Muslim country and to roam around the Capital of Malé everyone needs to dress modestly.

Malé, complete with its own artificial beach, swimming track, historic sites, and a spectacular skyline of candy-colored skyscrapers, manages to be both an island and a city. Previously a sparsely populated island, Malé has evolved into a world-class city with all the modern facilities like schools, hospitals and restaurants.

Malé is most famous for its motorbikes, the fastest way to get around. Taxis are easily available and you will be charged Rufiyaa 20 for each trip, no matter where you go in Malé. You could always take the easier option and walk: anywhere in Malé is reachable in ten minutes.

The very tempting features or factors that attract tourists to these heavenly islands are the very irresistible blue waters, sun and white sandy beaches.

In the Maldives the tourism industry is identical with resort islands and each resort is totally self-contained on a separate island.

Resorts often organized island-hopping trips where tourists visit a series of inhabited islands. If you feel like taking a lengthier trip, you will need to catch one of the island’s scheduled ferries from Malé.

The Maldives is considered by many to be the premier tropical beach destination in the world and the best place to relax and unwind from the hectic and chaotic lifestyle of the modern world.

Denmark: Copenhagen and its Famous Little Mermaid

As Denmark’s iconic landmark, I made sure to pay homage to the statue of the little mermaid when I visited Copenhagen recently.

Based on Hans Christian Andersen’s timeless fairytale, The Little Mermaid (in Danish: Den Lille Havfrue), the small and rather average looking statue became Copenhagen’s icon and a major tourist attraction.

The Little Mermaid is a popular fairy tale about a young mermaid willing to give up her life in the sea and her identity as a mermaid to gain a human soul and to win the love of a human prince.

Did you know that “The Little Mermaid” was originally written as a ballet? It became very popular and since have been adapted in numerous media such as musical theaters and animated films. The one from Disney was a sure-fire hit.

The statue was ordered to be made in 1909 by Carlsberg founder Carl Jacobsen who, after being fascinated by a ballet about the fairytale in Copenhagen, requested the Prima Ballerina, Ms. Ellen Price, to model for the statue.

The bronze statue was made by Edward Eriksen and unveiled on 1913.  The statue’s head was modeled after Ellen Price, but as the ballerina did not agree to pose in the nude, the sculptor’s wife was used for the body.

The small statue of the little mermaid normally sits on a rock in Copenhagen harbor in Langelinie.

If you are familiar in the Disney version of The Little Mermaid, at the end when Ariel is sitting on top of the rock looking longingly at Prince Eric, she is in exactly the same position that the real-life one is.

Sadly, the statue displayed in Copenhagen harbor has always been a copy; the sculptor’s heirs keep the original at an undisclosed location.

The Netherlands: Amsterdam Night Romance

This is my second time to visit the Land of the wooden shoe but my first time spending a night.

And while everyone’s busy packing up Amsterdam’s Red Light district, I strolled on the chilly avenues and saw Amsterdam enlightened at night.

I had a perfect date – it’s just me and the City.

Here are the photos for you to enjoy :)

Here is my photo near Rijksmuseum in Museumplein…

And while you’re in Amsterdam, you should not miss getting lost in its romantic canals – after all, the city is nicknamed as the Venice of the North :)

Turkey: Istanbul – where East meets West

In case anyone is wondering where I’ve been…well, I’ve been around – literally!

I became occupied in my month long vacation I have got no more time to update this blog.  But the good thing is that I’ve been around so much I have a thousand of photos to share with all of you.

First stop, Turkey!

I made sure that for 2012, I will be welcoming the new year to a place I’ve never spent new year’s eve before. And although this is my 3rd time to visit this magnificent city, there will always be something new to discover in Istanbul.

Here is a photo of the famous Blue Mosque taken during the blue hour (right after sunset).

And having a fantastic location is a big deal, this is my view from my hotel window – the Hagia Sofia at dawn…

And these should not be missed – Turkish delights!

My photo taken inside the Topkapi Palace Gardens…

I went up the Galata Tower in a chilly night – but its all worth it when I got these amazing night shots…

I will never get tired of touring Istanbul…Please do watch this space as I will be posting more of my travel photos soon.

Kenya: Langata and its tamed Giraffes

Earlier this November, I went to Nairobi in Kenya.

Being tagged as the Safari capital of Africa, one can feast their eyes with very close encounters of different wildlife.

My first stop was the Giraffe Center in Langata, near Nairobi City Center.  It is a non-profit center dedicated to save the remaining plight of Rothschild Giraffe in the area.

In here, you can actually feed the giraffes… While feeding the giraffes, they will stick their long tongues to get the food and your hands can get wet with their sticky saliva.

Their saliva is actually quite pleasant. It has a faint pleasant smell and, FYI;  has antibacterial qualities (to combat the bacterial Acacia thorns).

India: New Delhi turns 100

As I browse today’s newspaper, I came to know that yesterday marks the 100th Anniversary of New Delhi being the Capital of India.

On December 12, 1911, visiting King George V told crowds at an elaborate imperial ceremony that India’s capital would be moved from the eastern port of Calcutta to a new city to be built next to the ancient settlement of Delhi.

I made a trip to New Delhi last year and here are some photo memories…

Humayun's Tomb in Delhi, India

Here is the site of the 1911 Coronation of the Durbars – The Jama Masjid Mosque…

Here is the Red Fort in Old Delhi…

My souvenir pic at the India Gate…

And I distinctly remember Delhi because I was awestruck  at the beauty of the Lotus Temple…

And I am back at the Issa Khan’s Tomb – a part of Humayun’s Tomb and a UNESCO World Heritage Site…

Qatar : A photographer’s delight at night

Just 45 minutes flight away from Dubayy, another rising metropolis is tucked-in in the Arabian desert – Doha.

I ditched using my trusty point and shoot camera and bought an SLR instead and a weekend in Doha gave me a very good opportunity to try its features.

This time at night – here are my photos taken in Doha, Qatar…

Arabian dhow in Corniche in Doha

Here is the Museum of Islamic Art in Doha located in the Corniche.

And in a few years, a very striking skyline will be recognized that is – Doha…

And being an Islamic State, Qatar is dotted with numerous minarets of its beautifully crafted Mosques…

South Africa : The African Penguins

I saw a movie poster for Happy Feet 2 yesterday and it reminded me of my recent experience in South Africa.

While driving towards Cape Point, we made a stop over in Boulders Beach.

And there you can feast your eyes on African Penguins roaming freely in their natural habitat…

Nepal: Let the sun rise!

I have to wake up at 4AM today so we can drive up the Sarangkot Village. It is a popular viewing site in Pokhara, Nepal to see the Sun rise amongst the Himalayas Mountain Range.

Here is my photo taken earlier…Good morning folks!

And here is my shot of the majestic Sun – peeking in red…

Nepal: As the sun begin to set…

I am still on my new sojourn but now in a different city – I am currently in Pokhara, Nepal.

I’ve been cooking up ideas on my future blog posts to chronicle this awesome adventure but I can’t resist to instantly share this photo…

This is a shot at dusk in Fewa Lake located in Pokhara in Nepal.

Whatta view?!?

We have a long weekend in Dubai due to the country’s 40th National Day Celebration, so I took the opportunity to fly…

Just a preview, here’s what I saw early this morning from my plane seat…

And you guessed it right – it’s the Himalayas Mountain Range!

Fly…Fly High!

I’ve been reading a lot of blog posts lately, and I must admit I am more inspired to travel and share, too, new experiences I will encounter along the way.

Let me share one of the most inspiring travel quote that definitely keeps my motor running – to travel that is…

“Twenty years from now you will be more disappointed by the things you didn’t do than by the ones you did do. So throw off the bowlines, sail away from the safe harbor. Catch the trade winds in your sails. Explore. Dream. Discover.”

~ Mark Twain

Tomorrow, I will venture into a new, exotic destination…fly with me- fly high!

Dreaming a Parisian Holiday

I only see it in the movies or in the television – The Eiffel Tower, Louvre Museum and the Moulin Rouge…

I always dream of going to this romantic place, indulging myself in the culture and the way of life that is only – PARISIAN.

And early this year – this dream of mine became a reality…

I think the photos will speak for themselves :)

The Moulin Rouge

This is a breath-taking scene at night…

The Eiffel Tower

And this one, I thought I could only see in the movies…

Hey, now – I could not possibly leave Paris without a courtesy ‘Jump Shot’

And while I’m all worked up – might as well do a Jump shot in the Louvre…

Every night, I always dream to spend another night in this cosmopolitan…

New 7 Wonders of Nature

Right after the announcement of the New 7 Wonders of the World in 2007, a similar campaign was started to vote via a popularity poll 7 Natural wonders on the planet.

Based on a first count, the Provisional 7 Wonders of Nature are announced on 11.11.11 and includes:

  1. The Amazon – South America
  2.  Iguazu Falls – Argentina/Brazil
  3. Komodo  – Indonesia
  4. Halong Bay – Vietnam
  5.  Jeju Island – South Korea
  6.  Table Mountain – South Africa and
  7. Puerto Princesa Underground River – The Philippines

So proud to be a Filipino and the Puerto Princesa Underground River made it to the list.  Next year in January when I will visit my home country, I will try my best to see this natural wonder.

In the meantime, I can already tick 1 Natural wonder on my list since I visited the Table Mountain in South Africa recently. Certainly, a very scenic and natural place and deserves the honor.

New Seven Wonders of the World

Way back in school, from History to Geography to World Literature, one can be fascinated with the world wonders around us.

I, for one, have been an admirer of those monuments that stood still in the coming of age.

First, there were the 7 Wonders of the Ancient World, and Egypt’s Pyramids of Giza is actually the only standing monument, the others being destroyed by fire or other natural calamities.  During the New 7 Wonders campaign it became a little bit of controversy when they still included the Pyramids in the nominees for the New 7 Seven Wonders, but it was eventually settled by granting them an honorary title.

The Pyramids of Giza Complex, Giza - Egypt

After my Egypt experience, and soon after the declaration of the new 7 Wonders of the World on 07.07.07, I’ve always dreamt of taking a picture of mine with those wonders on the backdrop.

I feel so blessed being able to travel and be able to see four of the Seven New Wonders. And I made sure I did something I can uniquely identify myself – JUMP!

Presenting, my four New Wonders of World destination:

November 2010 – The Taj Mahal in Agra, India

Jumpshot at the Taj Mahal, Agra - India

December 2010 – The Red Rose City of Petra, Jordan (went back March 2011)

Jumpshot at the Monastery, Petra - Jordan

January 2011 – The Great Wall of China in Beijing

Jumpshot at the Great Wall of China, Beijing - China

March 2011 – The Colosseo in Rome, Italy

4 down and 3 more to go – the remaining destinations are:

  1. The Chichen Itza in Mexico
  2. The Cristo Redentor in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil
  3. The Machu Picchu in Peru

The remaining three are in Central and South America and location wise I can say these will be a very costly trip. Maybe all I can do for now is – dream!

But Hey! I never imagined actually going to my 1st four Wonders my whole life – it all started as a dream too! That’s all I’m sayin’….

The Phoenix Has Risen!

After so many suggestions to make my own blog, here I am writing one…

As the title suggests, I would like to associate this first blog entry to a Phoenix rising from its ashes…

A phoenix is a mythical sacred bird with a colorful image and sometimes viewed with a golden tail.  It is believed that it can burn itself when ending its life cycle, reducing itself to ashes and from which a new, young phoenix arises or reborn to live again.

The phoenix has long been presented as a symbol of rebirth, immortality, and renewal.

And to liken my future posts on my future travels and adventures – this blog, too, will be a rebirth of undying spirit to see something new, will be an immortal quest to experience new cultures in places I’ve never been and will be of renewed enthusiasm to see what the world has to offer.

Join me as a self-acclaimed globetrotter in my odyssey!

The phoenix has risen!
